GRAPHIC ARTS

QUESTIONS and ANSWERS

When we supply our printer with photographs, they don't look as good printed as they do on our computer screen. Is the printer doing something wrong?

Chances are that the resolution of photographs you supply your printer is too low for print reproduction. Images should be a minimum of 300 dpi (or pixel per inch) at the final reproduction size. If an image measures 2 inches by 3 inches at 300 dpi, but needs to be reproduced at 6 inches by 9 inches, the dpi would end up at 100 pixels per inch which is too low for print reproduction.

What is the difference between RGB and CMYK?

RGB represents Red, Blue and Green which are the colors used for computer monitors. CMYK represents Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black which are the colors of the inks used on a printing press.

I can prepare my own artwork on my computer and save money,
why should I hire a graphic artist?

While most of us are probably handy enough to put in an extra electric wall plug at home, it does not mean it will be done right. When designing and preparing artwork for print, there are technical and marketing issues to be considered. A graphic designer has the proper skill and experience to make sure the effort and costs involved actually make the project successful. It is always better to spend a little more than wasting a lot.
